New
Alumni group in the works!
There is a new GLUU alumni group in the works! Check out the Northwestern
University Gay and Lesbian Alumni (NUGALA) for all of the
details on the new group.
What
is GLUU?
GLUU originally stood for the Gay and Lesbian University Union.
Over time, however, the group has come to encompass a wider range
of sexual orientations, sexual identities and gender identities.
Who is the group for?
The group is primarily for graduate students, faculty, staff and
alumni who identify as LGBT. All persons looking for 'queer' community
are welcome at our events, however. Just bring an open mind.
What does GLUU do?
GLUU has worn many hats in its time. GLUU originally formed around
the issue of adding "sexual orientation" to NU's non-discrimination
policy duirng the 1980s. Then, in the early 1990s the group petitioned
the University to grant domestic partner benefits for University employees. When this
goal was accomplished the group remade itself and has become primarily
a social group. We currently meet for lunch on the first Friday and third Thursday of each month.
Who runs the group?
Because the group is currently (primarily) a social group, there
really is very little to run. There is a listserv that is largely administered by the University,
and there is this web site. Other than that, there's not too much
to administer, per se. Anyone can plan an event and advertise
it on the listserv. Private party announcements are discouraged,
unless they are strictly for the group.
How do I become a member?
There's really no such thing as membership. The most official
thing you can do is sign up on our listserv. Then, when you see a message posted to the
listserv for an event, just show up! We look forward to meeting
you.
If you're interested, you can also feel free to post a short bio
on our Out at NU page. Just send
us an e-mail with your name, department and anything relevant
that you'd like us to include.
